Specification

Every figure, and where it comes from.

Values are taken from the company's own technical specification and cross-checked against its quotations. Where two documents disagree, both readings and the rule applied are stated in the row.

The drawing

How it is built, and how it moves.

Drawn on the same drafting system as the rest of the set: five stroke weights by role, a 2 px grid, and motion derived from the machine's own kinematics rather than approximated.

How it works

The principle behind the specification.

What surface modification does

Untreated calcium carbonate is polar and hydrophilic. Loaded into a polymer it absorbs plasticiser, agglomerates, and the agglomerates act as stress concentrators. Stearic acid reacts with the particle surface to leave a layer of calcium stearate: a long non-polar chain pointing outward. Surface energy drops, the particle becomes hydrophobic, and it disperses through the polymer instead of clumping in it.

How the plant does it

Powder is metered into a jacketed vessel by a screw feeder. Stearic acid is melted in an adjacent heated tank and dosed in by a metering pump at under two per cent. A three-tier high-speed impeller holds the whole charge in turbulent suspension so the molten acid is sheared over every particle rather than sitting on the surface of a heap. The pulveriser downstream breaks any agglomerate the coating stage forms.

What it is used for

Coated grades go into PVC, rubber, paint, adhesives, sealants and masterbatch, where moisture resistance and dispersion at high filler loading are what the customer is buying.
